Safer Web Use

Accessing resources may be a trigger for abuse in some situations. When accessing resources which you think may be perceived as a trigger for abuse please ensure you do the following:

  • Delete internet activity each time you use the computer.  Just leaving a site will not delete your computer history.
  • Dial another phone number after you have spoken to any agency for help, so redial can’t be used to track your phone use.
  • Before driving to a safe location, ensure that you have disabled any GPS tracking devices on your vehicle so you cannot be located.
  • Disable the GPS application on your smart phone.
To visit websites without other people who have access to your computer being able to tell; consider using your browser's ‘Private Browsing” feature. If you are unsure of what browser you are using, please visit whatbrowser.org.

Private Browsing in Google Chrome: Click on the Menu (3 horizontal lines) or wrench Icon located at the top right of the screen. Choose “New Incognito Window”.  Any sites visited in this window will not be traced.

Private Browsing in Internet Explorer: Click on the “Safety” button and go to In Private browsing. Any sites visited in this session will not be traced.

Private Browsing in Mozilla Firefox: From the “File” menu choose “New Private Window”.  Any sites visited in this window will not be traced.

Private Browsing in Apple Safari: Click ‘Safari” on the top left and go to Private Browsing.

If you have used the computer to visit sites you do not want to be seen you must take additional tracks to remove your browsing history. Instructions for removing evidence of a visit to this website for all major browsers are listed below. If you are unsure of what browser you are using, please visit whatbrowser.org.

Deleting Browser History in Google Chrome: Click on the “wrench” or “Menu” (three horizontal lines) icon, which is located near the top-right side of the browser window and then click History. This will take you to a list of all sites visited. Click the small arrow to the right of any site and choose “Remove from history” from the drop down that appears.

Deleting Browser History in Internet Explorer: You can delete your history by clicking the “Tools” menu and going to  “Internet Options” and then ‘Delete Files or” “Delete”. Choose the site(s) you want to delete.

Deleting Browser History in Mozilla Firefox: Click “History” from the menu and go to “Clear Recent History” and a new window will open. You can choose a length of time to delete information from. If in doubt choose ‘Today” and clear everything.

Deleting Browser History in Apple Safari: To remove your history choose “History” > “Show History” from the menu at the top of the screen. In the window that opens up you can remove sites one at a time by selecting them and pushing the delete button.
